British Union of Fascists (Sheffield District Cohort)
The British Union of Fascists are not popular in Sheffield. Despite their involvement in the peace movement, membership struggled to exceed 300 and there were only 50 Blackshirts in the city. This meant that the B.U.F. were unable to do anything when the Sheffield Peace Council declared its neutrality. Instead, the Sheffield Cohort removed themselves from the city and travelled to the B.U.F. stronghold in Manchester to offer their support.
However, Moseley is not willing to surrender one of the industrial engine rooms of the country without a fight. Although the government still has access to the produce of the steelworks, the Prime Minister is determined to deny this resource to his enemies.
To this end he has despatched Baron Arnold of Hale, the former Liberal and Labour MP for Penistone, to the region with the aim of bolstering support for the King, disrupting trade to and from the city, and guarding against a sudden move against Manchester whilst the Army of the North was focused on Liverpool.
Baron Sidney Arnold has been chosen for this task due to his extensive network of contacts on both sides of the Pennines. Although he is no military expert, as a former Paymaster-General he has the necessary authority and gravitas to be able to command the disparate Royalist forces in the area.
The Sheffield Cohort have travelled back to their home county with the Baron, along with reinforcements from the Manchester Legion. Individual platoons and squads have set about blockading the passes across the mountains and attempting to recruit new members in the villages surrounding Sheffield.
One such squad is led by Lieutenant Nigel Chuffington-Smyth, an arrogant and devious officer intent on his own self-promotion. He is ably supported in his duties by Sergeant Jack Boot and Recruitment Officer Heather Brown. Chuffington-Smyth has been able to report a number of successes so far, including turning back an armoured column of socialist deserters, routing a group of bandits from Handsworth and arresting their leader and even capturing a shipment of Russian weapons being smuggled to one of the armed worker’s collectives south of the city. They've now armed themselves with the brand new Russian armaments.
The only fly in the ointment is that Miss Heather Brown has been captured by a communist rabble whilst bravely recruiting new militiamen. Chuffington-Smyth has made it his top priority to secure Miss Brown’s release and pay the misbegotten scum back for their temerity.
